Character Name: Tir McDohl
Series: Suikoden
Timeline: After the events of Suikoden II
Canon Resource Link: Here
What your character can offer: Tir, being a Tenkai Star, has natural leadership skills and charisma. He was able to unite together the 108 Stars of Destiny as well as the many opressed factions beneath the Scarlet Moon Empire in order to form the Toran Liberation Army. As their commander, Tir led his forces to victory over the corrupted Emperor Barbossa, bearer of the Sovereign Rune, and the alliance of dark minds that aided him; Windy the court magician and bearer of one half of the Gate Rune, Neclord the vampire and bearer of the stolen Blue Moon Rune, and the black knight Yuber who bore the Eightfold Rune. In the end, the might of the 108 Stars under Tir's leadershup was a match for the enemy forces and Toran was made into a democratic republic. Tir was nominated to be the first pesident of the new nation, but he turned the position down and fled his home for reasons never fully stated to the people.
In spite of his natural friendliness and easy going personality, is that he tends to keep people at arm's length figuratively. This is, of course, because of his other most notable ability. That being the fact that he is a bearer of one of the 27 True Runes. In particular, the Rune of Life and Death, often called the Soul Eater, is the one he carries. The powers of this Rune are as it says, it governs the balance of Life and Death around the user. The Soul Eater is known as a cursed rune. It takes the lives of those around the bearer and uses their souls to grow in power. During the Toran Liberation War, when Tir held the Soul Eater, many of his loved ones were taken, such as his father, Teo, and even his friend, Ted. During the taking of the latter, Ted communicated to the Soul Eater, ordering it to absorb his soul. The True Rune’s Will took action, and killed Ted. It, however, can also give the gift of life. Towards the end of the Toran Liberation War, Leknaat communicated with the Soul Eater upon the gathering of the 108 Stars of Destiny in order to command it give new life to the soul of Gremio, Tir's lifelong protector and friend.
The Soul Eater's magic relies mostly on the power of Death to do devour the soul of one or more enemies, but it can also condense dark matter into energy and use it to cause damage on a massive scale. However, with the right amount of will, an attack by the Soul Eater doesn't HAVE to be fatal. As demonstrated with Ted in Suikoden IV, the Soul Eater's spells can absorb life force to the user without completely devouring the soul of the enemy. Tir himself never learned how to obtain this sort of mastery, due to Ted's demise. Because of this, he fled his home in order to keep the Soul Eater from feeding upon his friends and loved ones But he is slowly learning to control it better so that he might one day rejoin society.
Soul Eater, like all Runes, has four tiers of spells. Firstly, there is the Finger of Death, which devours the soul of a single person. The second is Black Shadow, a condensed dark matter wave that effects a wide area. The third is the Gate of Hell, which allows the Soul Eater to feast on the souls of several people at once. The final and most powerful tier is the Judgement tier, which summons the familiars of Soul Eater in order to cast scathing damage to the very soul of a single person, which the Soul Eater, of course, consumes afterwards.
BEYOND the Soul Eater, Tir is a master martial artist. He was trained by Kai, a bo master and former General of the Scarlet Moon Empire, in the aincient ways of Qlon staff fighting. This, of course, was all commisioned by Tir's father, also a General beneath Emperor Barbossa, in the hope that someday Tir might become a great General as well. Kai, however, only taught Tir non-fatal techniques intended to not just strengthen his body, but also his soul. His training was ruthless and unforgiving, he forged the young Tir into a fine warrior. Inspite of Tir still referring to Kai as "Master Kai" (even when Kai was technically his subordinate within the Liberation Army), Kai considered Tir to It is likely because of this that Tir is able to wield the Soul Eater without the Rune consuming him. As of his last appearence in canon (at age 19), Tir is considered a master-level staff fighter.
What items will they be bringing with them? Tir will bring with him, of course, his Rune (he can't rid himself of it willingly). But, in addition to that, he has a few other personal items that he holds near and dear:
- The Heaven Fang Staff: The day Master Kai left Tir's home, he had given Tir his own staff to train with that morning rather than the standard practice bo. The Heaven Fang Staff is carved from the strongest diamond treated oak in the Great Forest region of Toran, as well as gold ornamentation from the monks of Qlon. It has incredible value to Tir not just as a weapon but as a symbol that represents Master Kai's approval of his skill.
- A recipe for Gremio's Secial Stew: Gremio was Tir's caretaker for most of his life given his father's status and schedule. Gremio had a signature stew recipe that remains Tir's favorite to this day. If he is ever without Gremio (which isn't often), he will show this recipe to other cooks so that they might be able to replicate it. None of them really live up to the original, though...
- A Wooden Amulet: One of these makes an appearence in some manner in every Suikoden game, and are actually a reference to part of the original Shui Hu Zhan epic novel. Tir's own amulet was a gift from Kasumi, a friend he made during the war with Barbossa whom fell in love with him though she never outright told him, even after they met again in Dunan years later.
- A green and purple headwrap: It is suspected this is something Tir's mother gave him, though it is never said.
- A photo of himself, his father, Master Kai, Ted, Gremio, Cleo, and Pahn: This has always been Tir's family, and always will be.
Third-Person Sample: The clearest sound that morning was one those familiar with the daily habits and practices of one Tir McDohl were quite familiar with. Just as a cock would ring in the day with a crow, Tir rang in the dawn with the noise of wood against wood. Loud, sharp, and strong these noises were. One object was, of course, the Heaven Fang Staff, his trusted weapon and friend. The other sound emitted from a simple craft that Master Kai had taught Tir how to make for himself and training, that being a series of rope covered stakes with "arms" that were meant to represent various targets. The denizens of Banner Village had been kind enough to give him the lumber needed to complete such a construct, as well as the rope for the finishing touch.
And each morning, as dawn broke, he was there to train his skill. To him, this was meditation. It is what kept his mind and soul sharp for the many trials he was certain he would face whilst being the immortal chosen bearer of the True Rune of Life and Death. He would often work himself to his barest physical capacity. To where it was all he could do to keep from falling over in exhaustion. He rather liked this state of being, really. The endorphin rush, the relaxing and tired muscles, the soreness that forced him to remain still for hours on end...It was rather welcome given his second hobby...
As mid morning came to pass, Tir set his staff aside and gave himself a brisk splashing of cool water and wiping his bare chest with a fluffed cloth he had been allowed use of from the inn. He was in tip shape to begin that second hobby now, actually...Fishing. And oh what a hobby it was! He could almost taste the fresh meat cooked into Gremio's signature stew as began his walk out of the forest and down to the docks of Banner Village...
The forest seemed awfully dry for this time of year, Tir thought to himself as he walked along. And, for that matter, many of these trees hardly seemed familiar at all. He'd spent at least a year and a half in Banner so far...he was certain he was well enough accquainted with how the forest looked during any given time of year that he could tell if this was it or not. And as he walked along, he grew certain it wasn't. And it was not Banner Village that met him on the other side...but another, far stranger world entirely.
As an inhuman noise was heard nearby, Tir quickly threw off the towel and readied Heaven Fang into a defensive position...But it wasn't the monster that caused him to panic. It was the haunting...burning sensation that burned on his right hand that caused him to break into a cold sweat.
First-Person Sample: I find myself wondering if this could possibly be a vision of Soul Eater... It was something Leknaat told me of once. That the Runes themselves can show visions of or even grant passage to other realities. Her own Rune governed part of that delicate balance...
So have you sent me here, Soul Eater? Is this your way of testing me once more? It's a funny way of showing it...taking me away from Gremio like that. I can't access your spells, either... Though I'd call that a blessing.
And yet I can still feel you and hear you... Just what is the meaning here? Is it you or some other sorcery that has brought me to this place?
