Centralizing our defense force and making sure that everyone who can't fight is protected isn't a good idea?

You give them one big target that way, as opposed to several, smaller targets.

Centralized forces are better when you have superior munitions and logistics. But we're the weaker enemy here. Our best hope is to spread out, thus splitting their focus.

And leave some people alone and defenseless. I'm not a tactician, so far all I know what you're saying makes the most logical sense... but I can't be okay with that.
